Morning Walk

I woke up this Sunday morning, my back float on the mattress thinking about everything I wanted to accomplish this weekend. We got some much needed rain all day long yesterday – that steady mist that my pasture seed and fertilizer desperately needed. Megan’s parents are in town this weekend and we had plans to work on the bridge over the creek and paint the barn bathroom. The weather had other plans, so we accomplished some inside things that we just never could seem to finish.

The clinic barn got fans mounted in each of the stalls and we corrected the order of some of the switches. Megan got some client information posters up in the exam space and we put up an organizer that clips all of the pitchforks, brooms, and squeegees on the wall.

We spent the entire afternoon running electrical wire in the rafters at our horse barn to mount some flood lights at the front and back of the barn doors. Our mare is due to foal in the next several days and we’ll be at the barn a bit during the night, so it’ll be nice to have some light out there. We worked until dark. Megan and her mom went to pick up dinner and we ate in the tack room – Megan and I used the tack trunk as a table, and her parents used a piece of subfloor laid on my saw horses.

Megan and I walked up to the barn this morning to feed, clean stalls, and turn the horses out after having been in for the rain all day and night. The air felt so clean hitting the lungs this morning. There was a little breeze, the birds were loud, and the sun was warm. The horses took a run in the pasture. Coffee mug in hand, we went for a walk down to the creek to see how things looked after the rain. I love hearing the creek babble a little louder with a higher water level after the rain. The plants look greener and the ground darker after a day of rain. We stopped every so often to pull a little branch from the creek and sniff a Carolina Allspice bud to see if that wonderful smell is there just yet. It just felt good to be out there – almost like that same feeling you get when you’re at the beach and take the morning walk before everyone is out and about.

The morning calm. Wouldn’t it be nice if every morning could start that way. I hate to be in a rush. It just makes my chest tight. The spring schedule is demanding and there is so much that has to get accomplished in the day, and so much unknown that gets added to the plan. I am worse than the cable guy most days. But today, I’m not in a rush, and will not be rushed. I hope you can find some time to demand the same for yourself.
